South Africa's International Marimba and Steelpan Festival is the largest festival of its kind. The highly successful 3rd Education Africa International Marimba and Steelpan Festival in August 2014 included over 1600 participants from all over South Africa as well as Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Nigeria, France and the USA took part. This year's 4th annual festival will include participants from many African countries, Europe, USA, and Australia. Through tremendous effort made in the past decade by various marimba and steelpan manufacturers, individuals, educational institutions and NGOs marimba-playing and steelpan-playing has become a sought-after activity by youth of all socio-economic backgrounds in South Africa. The International Marimba and Steelpan Festival celebrates these instruments and the great diversity of musicians who perform on marimba and pan.
